When the rings disappear, what has actually changed?

Earth’s line of sight, coincident with Saturn’s ring plane.
At Saturn equinox, when Earth passes through the ring plane, the rings can appear nearly edge-on. Ten meters of ice, seen along its edge from a billion kilometers, can vanish. Galileo’s 1612 puzzle returns as geometry. The same thinness that makes a world of rings also makes them intermittent from here.
