How can a small moon keep a 42-kilometer lane?

Prometheus and Pandora, among others, orbit in relation to ring material and help keep edges and the narrow F ring from dissolving into smoothness. A moon does not command ice by symbolism. Gravity rearranges orbits. Gaps, waves and wakes are negotiated.

Near the outer edge of the A ring the negotiation has a width. The Keeler Gap is about 42 kilometers, 26 miles, a narrow lane kept by a moon 8 kilometers across. NASA named the wavemaker Daphnis: a shepherd, a pipes player, a pastoral poet. Material on the inner edge of the gap orbits faster than the moon, so the waves there lead. Material on the outer edge moves slower, so the waves trail. The waves are horizontal and vertical. At equinox they cast shadows on a plane about 10 meters thick.

Saturn is not a jewel with a halo. Saturn is a system of orbits talking to each other. A gap 42 kilometers wide is one of those conversations, measured, not ciphered.
