The Order of the Five
Why did Saturn come first in a sky that did not yet know the Sun as center?
- A geocentric cosmos of nested spheres.
- Classical Greek and later Hellenistic / medieval reception.
- Astronomers ordering lights by apparent speed: slowest is farthest.
In the classical ordering of the planetary spheres, Saturn stands first because it is the highest and slowest: Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon, or, among the five wanderers, Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Venus → Mercury.
This does not mean Saturn was the first planet discovered. It means that in a geocentric cosmos, the slowest wanderer occupied the farthest crystalline office. Modern solar-system order is a different model. They are two pictures of the same lights, drawn for different centers.
RecordedHighest/farthest in that cosmology is not discovered first, and is not farthest from the Sun in AU.
