The Saturnine
When does a planet’s name become a temperament?
Humoral medicine, judicial astrology, early-modern melancholy.
Only after the historical material is secure: saturnine, melancholy, age, severity, limitation, discipline, structure. These are later words. They travel through humoral medicine, astrological temperament, early-modern melancholy, and modern archetypal talk.
Language history is not physics. A temperament named after a planet is a cultural office, not a causal mechanism. The slow wanderer invited certain metaphors. Metaphors are not orbits.
InterpretedDistinguish: language history · humoral medicine · judicial astrology · modern archetypal interpretation. None of these measures 29.4 years.
Why nextIn 1610 a tube of glass is turned on the slow light. The wanderer stops being only a light.
